Namaste!

I'm just about finished reading the Bhagavad Gita I bought some time ago, and I'm very interested in reading more texts. Does anyone know of any reliable/good translations of the Ṛg Veda?

Suggestions for translations of any other Hindu texts are great if you have them, but I'm really interested in reading the Ṛg Veda.

Thank you in advance!

Sanskrit Vibhakti Source [Apr. 20th, 2011|07:53 am]

There was a request some time ago on this forum for an online source for various Vibhakti forms of words in Sanskrit. There were two links provided in the comments to that post, but they don't seem to be working now. Anyway, I found this nice page which allows you to query any Vibhakti table based on the gender and ending vowel:
http://www.samskritabharati.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=413&lang=en

The best part is a page you can test your knowledge of Vibhaktis through a "quiz":
http://www.samskritabharati.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=413&lang=en

However I have not verified that all the information is error-free. Hope some of you find it useful!

Greetings on Ram Navami! [Apr. 12th, 2011|12:06 pm]

Hello people. Heartiest greetings to everyone on the occasion of Ram Navami. Please allow me to share with you a popular passage from Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas which in my view contains a beautiful summary of all the ideals that Sri Ram taught us through is acts during his lifetime. The passage, from Lanka Kand, describes Vibheeshan's anxiety upon seeing Ravan strikingly decorated for battle, on his mighty chariot packed with intimidating weapons, contrasting with Rama with no chariot, without even proper armour and footwear required for battle. Here's what Vibheeshan said, and Rama's reply.

In Hindi:

Kaliyuga. [Dec. 28th, 2010|07:07 pm]

According to Vedic astronomy the present age of kaliyuga started on Feb. 18th 3102 BCE. Richard Thompson in his book Vedic Cosmography and Astronomy points out that indeed on this date there occurred a very rare planetary alignment.

It dawned on me to punch in this date using astronomy software and sure enough the simulated sky shows a planetary alignment. The point of viewing in the simulation is at Varanasi. See the cut below for an image.

Vedic Literature [Nov. 28th, 2010|09:17 pm]

Can anyone recommend a good academic work that outlines the content and history of Vedic literature?

I've found Richard King's Indian Philosophy An Introduction to Hindu and Buddhist Thought quite refreshing because it treats the material as realistic and a worthy companion to western thought.

Something like this but outlining Vedic literature specifically would be desirable.

Hi,

I'd like to promote my new community: placeofworship. It's a community to share pictures of places of worship from around the world, of any religion. A place of worship can be anything from a cathedral or temple to a little shrine inside your home.

Photographic skill does not matter, as long as the pictures aren't horribly pixellated!

12 February 2010 Shiv Shakti Kul celebrated the divine occasion of Maha Shivaratri under the guidance and inspiration of Guruji Shri Shriyogeshvaraji by organizing a historical event of Maha Puja of 125,000 Paarthiva Shiva Linga (Shiv Linga made of Earth / soil) in one day. It was organized at  Vadodara, city founded on the Tapo Bhumi of Brahmarishi Shri Vishvamitraji. A team of more than 50 Pundits started making the Paarthiv Shiva Linga since early morning as mentioned in Shastras. Shiv Shakti Kul invited public participation in this great event. The basic motive for this Puja Ritual was to pray Bhagavan Shree Shivji to bless the world with his eternal mercy. This event was reported widely on main city TV channel, newspapers, radio. Hundreds  of people participated in this Maha Puja. They came to offer their love and devotion to Bhagavan Shree Shivji and to participate in this historical even. Disciples of  Guruji Shri Shriyogeshvaraji from Russia and Ukraine came to participate in this divine occasion.

From common man to high level political leaders, doctors and engineers all set on ground in equality to perform Puja. All were equal, all were devotees of Bhagavan Shri Shivji. Everybody was provided with all necessary things for Puja by Shiv Shakti Kul. In the evening there was Maha Aarati. More people joined this occasion of Maha Aarati. Everybody had dipak in hand and all performed the Aarati with Guruji Shri Shriyogeshvaraji. Specially for this occasion Shiv Shakti Kul had got recorded the Aarati "Aum Jay Shiv Aumkara". At the end of the devotional function, after the Aarati every body had Maha Prasadam of Vratam Food. The next day morning all the 125,000 Paarthiva Shivalingam were taken to the holy river Narmadaji near ancient town Chandod and were offered in the flowing water of Shri Narmada River who is daughter of Bhagavan Shri Shivji.
